The research is based on the contemporary position in cognitive science that the continuous reshaping of our external environment is intrinsic to human behavior — and a characteristic feature of human cognition. This (explicitly) ecological framing implies that cognition forms an active relation with its environment: That thinking involves agency. And furthermore, that our built environment, through the reciprocal feedback loops of agency, are an integrated aspect of human cognition, and not just a product of it. This research regards the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, with all its forms and social features, as a manifestation of this active, collective cognition.
